Bonus for PhD candidates who finish their dissertation on time

Regulations for the period 1 March 2012 to 1 March 2017

These are the rules for the different types of PhD candidates:

  1. PhD candidates on a four-year UvA contract (incl. FGw PhD candidates with a combination 0.8 FTE PhD/0.2 FTE teaching position)
  2. PhD candidates on a three-year UvA contract (incl. PhD candidates funded by the EU and PhD candidates on a three-year contract at the FGw)
  3. Part-time PhD candidates (eg. PhD candidates with parental leave)
  4. PhD candidates funded by grants or self-funded
Ad 1:
  • The PhD candidate receives 2,000 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee before the end of a four-year UvA contract
  • The PhD candidate receives 1,000 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee within three months after the end of a four-year UvA contract
  • The PhD candidate receives 500 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee within six months after the end of a four-year UvA contract
  • The PhD candidate receives 3,000 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee before the end of three years of a four-year UvA contract
Ad 2.
  • The PhD candidate receives 3,000 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee before the end of a three-year UvA contract
  • The PhD candidate receives 2,000 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee within three months after the end of a three-year UvA contract
  • The PhD candidate receives 1,000 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee within six months after the end of a three-year UvA contract
  • The PhD candidate receives 500 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee within one year after the end of a three-year UvA contrac
Ad 3.
  • The PhD candidate receives 2,000 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee before the end of the UvA contract
  • The PhD candidate receives 1,000 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee within three months after the end of the UvA contract
  • The PhD candidate receives 500 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee within six months after the end of the UvA contract
Ad 4.
  • The PhD candidate receives 2,000 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee before the end of the agreed term (that is, the term that is agreed at the start)
  • The PhD candidate receives 1,000 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee within three months after the end of the agreed term
  • The PhD candidate receives 500 Euro if the dissertation is approved by the committee within six months after the end of the agreed term

In all cases it is a requirement that the PhD defense should take place at the University of Amsterdam under the supervision of an ILLC member.

In case of contract extensions due to sick leave or parental/pregnancy leave, the period for the bonus payment is extended accordingly.

The bonus can be paid in two ways, either as reimbursement of costs connected with the PhD defense (printing costs, costs of the reception,..) or paid out directly via the salary administration as a taxable amount (which is less favourable).
